Sonya Cuellar was born in Rosenberg, Texas.  The oldest of three children and very independent, she began drawing and creating art at a young age.  As with many things in life, her career began accidentally. While working for a local entertainment company, she noticed a painting in a colleague’s office and inquired about the painter; it turned out the colleague was the artist.  That very day she went to the art supply store to buy canvas and paints.  In her Houston Heights garage apartment, Cuellar used a small wooden TV tray as her studio; eventually she turned her tiny dining room into a larger studio.  Several years later and at the urging of family and friends, Sonya began taking classes at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston Glassell School of Art and later at the University of Houston.  Cuellar has a strong commitment to her community and continues to donate her work to local and national charities including the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and the American Heart Association.  Her work has been exhibited at Studio Gallery, Jack Meier Gallery and the Museum of the Gulf Coast. Two years after Hurricane Ike, seven of her artworks were chosen for Green Revival, The Galveston Historical Foundation's 2010 reconstruction project. In 2013, six of Sonya's pieces were exhibited in Mayor Annise Parker's conference room at Houston's City Hall. Her painting was selected for the 2015 exhibition of The Big Show at Lawndale Art Center; the artwork was one of 76 chosen from 972 submissions. Sonya Cuellar’s artwork has been chosen for corporate collections, restaurants, and private collector’s homes.  She exhibits and works out of her studio in the Houston Heights and her work can be found at Native Citizen Design Studio at 2311 Dunlavy St., Houston, TX 77006.
